4 Peaceful Beach Destinations In Mexico That Are Very Safe This Winter

Are you planning on going to Mexico for a sunny getaway this winter, but you can’t seem to shake those persistent safety concerns?
You should know our Southerly neighbor is a relatively safe tourist destination overall, but even in places like Cancun or Puerto Vallarta, certain precautions must be taken:
Sticking to the well-delineated tourist zones, not flashing valuable items in public, or steering clear of suburban areas are only some of the measures tourists can take to ensure they have a hassle-free experience in Mexico.
That being said, there are a handful of Mexican destinations that are far more peaceful than your average resort hotspot, and where safety levels are even higher––so high we’d be surprised if a tourist was to ever get robbed, or bear witness to violence.
Including one of the lowest-risk destinations south of the border, here are 4 of the least-dangerous beach towns in Mexico for your consideration:
Isla Mujeres
Lying just off the coast from a bustling Cancun, Isla Mujeres is the quieter, more peaceful alternative host to a select number of hotels, sleepy seaside settlements hugged by turquoise waters, and unspoiled white-sand beaches that remain sargassum-free year-round.
Playa Norte, located at the northernmost tip of the island, has been voted time and again the prettiest beach in the Mexican Caribbean, and the landmark Impression Isla Mujeres by Secrets was crowned ‘Most Instagrammable Hotel’ in the world this year.
Other than the stunning coastal scenery and incredible resorts, Isla Mujeres boasts one of the highest safety levels in the region, with low levels of crime and near-inexistent violence, particularly within tourist-frequented zones––after all, it’s just a natural oasis, not a gang hotspot.
Puerto Escondido
Lining the honey-colored sands of southern Oaxaca, Puerto Escondido is, as the name indicates, a ‘hidden’ beachside town straddling the Pacific where locals and visitors alike enjoy a more laid-back lifestyle compared to the jam-packed Mexican Caribbean.
It is distinguished by its well-established backpacker scene, with numerous youth hostels and B&Bs placed directly on the shoreline, surfing culture, and wide Principal Beach, lined with tall palm trees and traditional rustic bars.
The best part? Tourists are under no serious risk of falling victim to, or witnessing violent acts in Puerto Escondido: as with the wider state of Oaxaca, it’s considered a Level 2 destination, meaning caution is advised, mostly due to pickpocketing, but personal integrity isn’t a major concern.
Progreso
A short 40-minute drive from the colonial treasure that is Merida, Progreso is a an up-and-coming leisure destination perched on the Gulf of Mexico, home to a beach-fringed Malecón, and thatch-roofed beach restaurants.
As it lacks Cancun’s staggering overdevelopment, Playa Progreso is among the most pristine of the Yucatán Peninsula, with unruffled sands and a picture-perfect palapa stretching out into aquamarine waters, and on weekdays, it almost feels like a private beach.
Whether it’s relaxing by the seaside, strolling a shop-filled downtown, or going for dinner in the evenings, there is no need to be constantly looking over your shoulder: U.S. authorities consider Progreso, as well as the whole Yucatán state, a low-risk, Level 1 destination with minimal crime.
Cabo San Lucas
The most luxurious of all Mexican resort towns, Cabo San Lucas, has the tight-knit security and high surveillance to back it up, with a heavily-guarded resort strip protected from the Baja California gangs and not a single major incident involving tourists in over a year.
You go there primarily to relax, pamper yourself, and be close to nature. It’s where you’ll find several of Mexico’s top-rated hotels, including the Grand Velas Los Cabos, whose upscale Cocina de Autor eatery has received the MICHELIN stamp of approval.
Recently, Cabo was also voted one of the safest destinations in Mexico, with 24.8% of the population feeling unsafe in their place of residence’s compared to a much-more sizable 75.2% that does not––in terms of security, it ranks just below Merida.
